Forecast Weather Map - click to enlarge

Sat, 01 Sep 2012 07:30:00 EDT
The heavy rain and strong thunderstorms associated with a weakening Tropical Depression Isaac will continue over the next few days. This system is forecast to move over Missouri, Illinois, and eventually over the Ohio River Valley by the end of the weekend with periods of moderate to heavy rain expected. The expected rainfall will be less than what fell over the Deep South when Isaac made landfall. Over the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes, a cold front is expected to become stationary, with much drier conditions north of the front and humid conditions to the south. This same front is forecast to clear the northeast U.S. and make its way into the Mid-Atlantic region by Saturday night. A developing low over the Northern Plains and into Montana will increase the winds. Monsoonal moisture over the Inter-Mountain West will fuel scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly during the afternoon and evening hours. National Drought Summary

Thu, 23 Aug 2012 10:56:00 EDT
This U.S. Drought Monitor week saw a few notable improvements and some serious degradation. Temperatures have generally been below normal this week from the east side of the Rockies to the East Coast, with the exception of Texas, the Southeast Coast, and northern New England. This has helped ease drought impacts, particularly in those areas where beneficial precipitation fell. One such area is in the Ohio Valley where parts of Indiana saw more than five inches of rain. This is the second straight week of beneficial precipitation for some of these areas and this precipitation has largely alleviated Exceptional Drought from the state, despite lingering impacts still being felt. Last week, drought gripped slightly less of the agricultural land in the country with 85% of the U.S. corn crop, 83% of soybeans, 63% of hay, and 71% of cattle areas experiencing drought. Details…

The drought is impacting the price of food throughout the country. The western U.S. has been experiencing temperatures well above average for the past week. Heat is expected to re-intensify over the central and eastern U.S. next week. The 2012 drought follows a warm winter with unusually low snow cover over the Great Plains, and dry conditions in much of the Southwest, Southeast and sections of the Great Plains due, in part, to 2 La Nina winters in a row.
