Winter Weather Outlooks

Hi Everyone,

The consensus is building for a colder and snowier for a good portion of the US.

My thought is that this winter, especially for the Eastern US will feature temperatures below average and above average snowfall.  This year, we can expect a weak El Nino, which will help the subtropical jet stream to be much more active, meaning bigger storms.  Certain indicators such as the Arctic Oscillation will likely be negative, meaning the polar vortex can get displaced and allow arctic air to enter the US.  Another key item is blocking.  If the North Atlantic Oscillation is negative this winter and odds are it will be, that will play a role to slow down these storms that form along the East Coast.  This will mean the threat of bigger winter storms likely.  For instance, Philadelphia may see twice the average snowfall (20 inches).  Monthly temperatures may average -1 to -3 degrees.  For the Western US, place like California, should get some above average precipitation.  Still, a major and severe drought remain for these locations.  So, hopefully, tey get the much needed rainfall. Unfortunately, too much precipitation occurs and you get major flooding.  Check out below some of the winter weather outlooks.
